WHAT IS A ROUND-THE-WORLD AIRFARE?
Essentially, a round-the-world (RTW) fare is anything from two to 16 stops on the one itinerary and travelling around the globe in the one direction. There are three different types of round-the-world itineraries, each with their own perks.
Traditional Alliance round-the-world airfare
The first type of RTW itinerary is the traditional alliance RTW airfare. This product is offered by each major airline alliance, such as oneworld, SkyTeam, and Star Alliance. Generally these fares are limited by either mileage (Star Alliance, SkyTeam and oneworld) or continents (oneworld) and permit up to 16 flights with the affiliated airlines within the mileage limitation or geographic restriction.
These traditional fares do represent excellent value when used to their fullest, using the maximum number of flights and stopovers. They also provide excellent flexibility for changes and cancellations, with the ability to re-route the journey after it’s commenced with minimal charges.
Mini round-the-world airfare
These are the most common RTW itineraries and are promoted as 3-, 4-, or 5-stop round-the-world airfares. Originally pioneered by airlines to connect the dots between serviced destinations, these RTW fares have evolved into a variety of products, using different airline alliances and even low-cost carriers.
These complex fares are generally only available via a travel consultant who is able to navigate the complex rules and deliver the best airfare for you. Mini RTW fares are not restricted to mileage or a particular geographic region, and instead use a designated flight routing.
Constructional round-the-world airfare
The third type of RTW airfare is the constructional RTW itinerary made for you by a travel consultant. These itineraries are built using a combination of two or more airfares to ‘construct’ or build your journey. This style of RTW airfare may involve a selection of one-way fares from each city in the itinerary to obtain the total price, or start with a mini RTW itinerary, adding one-way fares to connect the dots between points.
